Bank of New Zealand Colonial 50 Pounds Colour Trial
On February 6 1840 the Waitangi Treaty had been signed which allowed settlers to enter New Zealand. The Union Bank of Australia established its first office in Port Nicholson now known as Wellington issuing New Zealand's first banknote. From 1840-1934 a total of 14 colonial trading banks had been established issuing around 150 various notes.
The Bank of New Zealand was incorporated in 1861 and commenced business on the 16th October that same year in Queen Street Auckland. Branches were operating in Dunedin Wellington Nelson and London by 1862.
In 1872, the bank moved into Australia opening in Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle and Adelaide.
Today New Zealand's colonial notes are gaining numismatic recognition world-wide for their genuine rarity and desirability as classic works of art.
