Wynyard Coins has helped collectors from Australia and overseas since 1966. We buy and sell Coins, Tokens and Banknotes from Australia and around the world as well as Ancients, Medallions and Accessories. We are The Complete Numismatic Stockists!
- 1933 - M.R. (Bob) Roberts began his interest in numismatics when a family friend gave him a 1927 Canberra Florin for his fourth birthday. Over the next 30-odd years, he amassed a lot of coins – mostly rare and low mintage pennies plus mint errors and coin varieties.
- 1966 - On Saturday 12th February 1966 –two days before Australia’s decimal changeover – Bob put his coins up for sale at the Buffalo Hall, near Central Railway Station, Sydney. Bob returned home with more coins than he had started out with, and pockets full of cash!
- 1969 - In December 1969, Bob opened the doors at shop 11a Hunter Arcade, just a few metres from the four decade location at shop 7.
- 1973 - Wynyard Coins moves to bigger and better premises at 7 Hunter Arcade. Our store is still in this location 43 years later.
- 1974 - Our first Numismatic Listing was published in 1974. The first edition of NUMI$NEWS, the Wynyard Coin Centre’s mail-order catalogue, was published in 1978 and has now chalked up more than 700 editions. It is distributed by mail across Australia and around the world.
- 1988 - Thousands queue outside Wynyard Coins to get their hands on Australia's and the world's first polymer banknote, the 1988 Bicentenary $10.
- 1989 - Current Numismatic Manager, Joe Dettling, starts his career in numismatics with M.R. Roberts at just 15 years of age.
- 1997-2000 - Wynyard Coins becomes Australia’s largest distributor of Sydney 2000 Olympic memorabilia, including countdown pins and coins from both Australian mints.
- 2015 - Wynyard Coins launches its online store.
- 12th February 2016 - M.R.Roberts celebrates 50 years in business.
- 25th November 2016 - After 47 years in the Hunter Arcade, the doors closed for the last time on Friday 25th November to make way for the new Brookfield, Wynyard Place.
- 12th December 2016 - The brand new, brighter and larger store opened for business at 3 Barrack Street Sydney, just a short 5 minute walk from the old store at Wynyard. To mark the occasion, an Open Day was held on Friday 16th December with special guest Stevan Stojanovic, sculptor and designer from the Royal Australian Mint.
- December 2023 - Wynyard Coin Centre proudly became the first coin dealer to establish a partnership with EQL, introducing Run Fair access for highly sought-after coin releases.
Some of our best items are never listed because we have a “Wants List”. Those customers get first bite of the cherry. If there is something that you require – particularly hard-to-obtain pieces – please send us your wants list and we will do our best to fill it.
Wynyard Coins’ deals with collectors, dealers, auction houses, promoters and, indeed, just about anyone interested in our great hobby, Numismatics. We have bought and sold some of the world’s rarest coins and banknotes including:
- Unique New South Wales 1813 Colonial “15 Pence” mistrike Dump
- Unique German New Guinea 1914, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 Mark banknote set, serial number 001
- An exceedingly rare New Zealand 1935 pattern Waitangi Silver Crown
- New Zealand 1933, Pattern Silver Shilling
- The Australian 1887 Sydney Mint Gold 5 Pound, 2 Pound, Sovereign and Half Sovereign complete proof set for the world record price in 1989 for $250,000.00
Our prices are almost always below market values. For example, the scarce New Zealand undated Pattern George VI Crown was offered by a Perth dealer for $9500.00, a Melbourne dealer for $4950.00, while we sold our example at the same time for $1250.00, quite a difference!
