This coin celebrates 150 years of self government in Queensland. By declaration in 1859, Queen Victoria separated the state of Queensland from New South Wales. In the 1850's, the people of north-eastern Australia began a push for a separate state and sent their petitions to England. On 10 July 1859, the ship Clarence, with the word 'separation' emblazoned on its hull, sailed into Brisbane, bringing news that on 6 June 1859, Queen Victoria had signed the Letters patent declaring a new colony. The news was welcomed with a 14-gun salute and fireworks in the harbour. Queen Victoria favoured the name 'Queensland' over the suggested title of Cooksland in honour of Captain James Cook.
The reverse design of the coin depicts an evolving Australia with Queensland extruded in the foreground. Five maps of Australia represent the gradual development of the states and territories to arrive at the boundaries of modern-day Queensland. The coin is the 6th in a series commemorating milestones in Australian state government. It is housed encapsulated in a black leatherette, hinged-lid presentation case, protected in a black and white cardboard shipper and accompanied by a numbered ceretificate of authenticity.
The mintage limit of 12,500 set by the Royal Australian Mint, Canberra, was not reached with just 3,206 coins actually struck.
