Few traditions hold the same emotional weight as the Last Post. Originally performed to signal the end of a soldier’s day, the familiar bugle call has become a defining element of military funerals and remembrance ceremonies across Australia.

Played following the Ode of Remembrance, the Last Post precedes a minute’s silence, providing a poignant moment to reflect upon the sacrifices made by those who have served in wars, conflicts and peace operations. This enduring tradition lies at the heart of the Royal Australian Mint’s 2026 The Last Post $2 coin.

The coin’s design depicts a bugler sounding the Last Post before a war memorial at sundown. Musical staves and bars radiate across the composition like sound waves, their arrangement also reminiscent of the setting sun dipping below the horizon. Musical rests incorporated into the design symbolise the period of silence that follows the Last Post and reflect its association with fallen service personnel having gone to their final rest.

Memorial steps cut across the composition, grounding the design in the physical spaces where remembrance takes place, while the inscriptions ‘The Last Post’ and ‘Remembrance’ follow the curve of the coin.

Colour plays a defining role in the design, with dusky oranges and deep purples evoking the hues of twilight. Struck in silver to a Proof finish, this special collector edition also features the ‘C’ mintmark and the designer’s initials ‘LA’ near the rim.

The Last Post release follows the Royal Australian Mint’s Dawn Service program released in April 2026, with both programs honouring remembrance traditions deeply ingrained within the Australian consciousness.
