The Royal Australian Mint celebrates 70 years of Australian television broadcasting with a colourful design paying tribute to our television history.
Australian television flickered to life on 16 September 1956, just in time for the Melbourne Olympic Games, when Bruce Gyngell famously greeted viewers with, “Good evening and welcome to television.” In its early black-and-white years, families gathered around bulky sets for newsreels, variety hours and children’s programs that quickly became household favourites. The arrival of colour in 1975 transformed the viewing experience, ushering in iconic shows like Countdown and bringing sport and drama to vivid life.
Through the decades, programs such as Neighbours, Play School and Four Corners helped shape national conversations and cultural identity. Satellite links and regional broadcasting expanded television’s reach, connecting remote communities to shared moments. Today, Australian television blends free-to-air, streaming and on-demand viewing, continuing to tell local stories while competing on a global stage - proof that a medium born in black and white still thrives in a brilliant, digital age.
The coin is covered in small icons which weave a tale of the history of Australian television. Each illustration represents a memorable Australian TV broadcast – how many can you spot? The icons surround the text “Australian Broadcasting 1956 – 2026”. The colour print portion of this design is an abstract representation of the colour bars from TV’s test pattern created by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE). The black and white portions of the print are present to be inclusive of the early days of black and white television.

We will endeavour to dispatch orders as soon as possible, please allow 2-3 weeks for delivery within Australia and 4-6 weeks overseas.
We requires full payment with order, plus all shipping/postage charges before we dispatch any goods.

*Shipping charges for Australia is a flat fee of $9.95, except EQL launches, heavy items such as coin rolls, books, accessories and large quantities of coins and banknotes which will be charged at current Australia Post charges. We will advise you of these costs before shipping.
EQL Launches/New Releases. The regular Flat fee ($9.95) does not apply to EQL Launches. Shipping charges for EQL new releases will differ and this rate will be advised at the time of entry.
Free Shipping: On orders $350.00 and over made in one transaction for delivery within Australia only.
Free Express Upgrade: Domestic Australian orders over the value of $1000 will automatically upgrade to Express Post at no additional expense.

Returns/Refund/Cancellations
Any missing item, return or refund request must be put by email to sales@wynyardcoins.com.au within no more than seven (7) days of receipt.
Damaged Faulty. Wynyard Coin Centre will attempt to exchange (if available) or provide a refund for any items delivered damaged, faulty or unsatisfactory when returned in original, undamaged condition with all product components as supplied within seven (7) days of receipt.
Change of Mind. Cancelled items/orders for customer change of mind will be refunded less postage charges, merchant fees (PayPal 2.6%, VISA/Mastercard, Shop Pay, Apple Pay & Google Pay 1.6% + $0.30 or current equivalent rates) associated with accepting the original payment, and a 20% restocking fee to cover reasonable administrative and handling costs.
Prior to Dispatch: Requests to cancel an order must be made within seven (7) days of purchase.
After Dispatch / Delivery: Change of mind return requests must be made within seven (7) days of receipt. Approved returns must be received by us within fourteen (14) days of approval.
Items must be returned in original condition with all packaging and components as supplied.
