$5 2000 Sydney Olympics Wrestling Al/Bronze UNC
Issued in September 1998 this coin is the 24th in a 28 Coin Sydney 2000 Aluminium Bronze Specimen Collection produced jointly by the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra and the Perth Mint. The coin is presented sealed on a credit-card style pack.
When the modern Olympic Games resumed in Athens in 1896 greco-roman wrestling was deemed so historically significant that it became a focus of the Games. Eight years later Olympic officials added freestyle wrestling which had far less history and far less grandeur but great popularity. In greco-roman competition wrestlers use only their arms and upper bodies to attack. In freestyle wrestlers also use their legs and may hold opponents above or below the waist.
