$5 2000 Sydney Olympics Canoe/Kayak Al/Bronze UNC
Issued in September 1998 this coin is the fourth in a 28 Coin Sydney 2000 Aluminium Bronze Specimen Collection produced jointly by the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra and the Perth Mint. The coin is presented sealed on a credit-card style pack.
Sprint canoe-kayak was a demonstration sport at the 1924 Olympic Games gaining full-medal status in 1936. The dramatic whitewater branch of the sport - slalom - was added in 1972 but didn't appear again until Barcelona in 1992. Women compete only in kayaks - closed boats paddled from a sitting position with a double-bladed paddle. Men race in kayaks and canoes - boats paddled from a kneeling position with a single-bladed paddle
