$5 1992 Space Al/Bronze Proof
The reverse design of this commemorative $5 coin was the result of an Australia-wide competition held during late 1991. The winner was John Skillington, a teacher from Albury in N.S.W.
In response to the competition brief, which called for designs reflecting Australia's role in the space industry and the benefits of space technology to our lifestyles, his design features the form of the Southern Cross as a suggestion of satellites orbiting above and scanning a globally rendered Australian continent.
The standard proof version of the 1992 aluminium bronze Space $5 coin was distributed, encapsulated, in a square silver leatherette, hinged lid case protected by a special presentation box.
Note: Damaged box - the silver foil coating used on the exterior surface of the presentation case. This coating is prone to deterioration over time with the case sealing itself to the tight-fitting cardboard shipper.
