With possibly only as few as 200 struck the Kookaburra Trial Pattern series forms one of Australia's great numismatic rarities. The square trials resulted from an initiative to find a lighter and durable alternative to the bulky copper circulation pennies and halfpennies. Thirteen different trial types were struck and distributed to Government officials VIP's and dignitaries for assessment. While the distinctive square coins met with some approval opposition from vending machine operators and the resignation of Treasurer William Watt saw the project shelved.
To celebrate one of Australia's disitinctive coin designs the Royal Australian Mint has struck a set of three 25 Cent Fine Silver Proof Coins dated 2019 featuring designs inspired by the kookaburra pennies from 1919-1921.
