The portrait of the Queen on the front of the Australian one dollar note is based on a photo taken by Douglas Glass. The line interpretations of aboriginal art depicted on the back are based on an original bark painting by David Malangi.
By 1984 inflation over the 18-year period since the notes were first issued had significantly eroded the buying power of a dollar. The Australian Government introduced a one dollar denomination coin and rapidly withdrew all one dollar notes from circulation. The measure was taken to counter the high production cost and short lifespan of the notes.
