In 1951 the Royal Mint in London were commissioned to strike a portion of Australia's circulating silver coinage. Following normal tradition the Royal Mint struck a very small quantity of each denomination in proof - specifically for designers members of parliament and heads of state. The mintage of only 20 of each type was so tiny that it is extremely rare to find these in superb FDC.
The term 'proof' refers to a coins method of manufacture not its state of preservation. Australian proof coins are struck from polished or specially prepared dies and have near brilliant surfaces with perfect detail.
The 'PL' mintmark is an abbreviation of the Latin term Pecunia Londinii which translates as Money of London. An alternate Latin phrase Percussa Londinio which translates as Struck at London.
This 1951 PL Proof Pair were struck in very small numbers compared to the 60 million standard circulation issues for that year.
