When the Australian Government was considering the replacement of the large bronze halfpennies and pennies in 1919 with a smaller lighter coinage the branch of the Royal Mint in Melbourne struck patterns of the copper nickel and silver kookaburra halfpennies and pennies and distributed to the treasury parliamentarians VIP's and dignitaries.
This Australian 1919-1921 Square Penny striking in lead features the George V obverse portrait only designed by C.D (Douglas) Richardson of Stokes & Son Melbourne and measures 15mm x 13mm.
