This coin is the twelfth in a lunar coin series struck by the Royal Australian Mint, Canberra. Each coin is housed encapsulated in a plush red leatherette, hinged-lid presentation case, protected by a Lunar series shipper and accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity. The issue limit of 10,000 proofs was not reached with the mintage declared at 2,499 coins.

The Chinese Zodiac, Sheng Xiao, has its basis in a twelve-year cycle. Each year is represented by one of twelve animals with unique personality traits, with these characteristics being passed on to people born in that year. In 2018, the Lunar Year of the Dog saw the birth of many people who are said to be faithful, courageous, agile, smart and warm-hearted.

The Chinese calendar also rotates through the elements of earth, fire, water, metal and wood as part of a larger 60-year cycle. The earth dogs born in 2018 will also be communicative, serious, and responsible in work. The reverse design combines the symmetrical borders of award-winning coin designer Vladimir Gottwald with an illustration of a dog standing on a rocky outcrop in a woodland. Outer cardboard box has a slight tear.
