Superb rims, Lustrous Uncirculated.

Affectionately known as 'Cartwheels' because of their large size and weight the 1oz copper penny coin is significant in being the first coin (along with the 2 oz copper twopence) to be produced using James Watt and Matthew Boulton's steam powered coining press in Soho Birmingham. The coins contained exactly one ounce (avoirdupois) of copper making them ideal as substitutes for weights in measuring produce a task for which they were intentionally designed. Their size was a deliberate (and at the time successful) attempt to restore confidence in British coinage by producing coins which had an intrinsic value close to their nominal value after making an allowance for the costs of manufacture.

The coin was given a value of 2 pence by Governor King throughout the infant colony of New South Wales in his proclamation of 1800. This was the basis for other English copper coins to circulate in the colony at twice their minted value. Other copper denominations were the large 2d coin valued at 4d the halfpenny valued at 1d and the farthing valued at ½d.

The broad raised rim was designed to protect the coin from excessive wear while the incuse legends would (supposedly) make forgery difficult.
